Parents and parents-to-be have lots of questions about how to properly care for their babies’ oral health. And rightly so! Their bundles of joy don’t come with “owners’ manuals,” and moms and dads want the best for their children.

Which is better at preventing early childhood cavities: breastfeeding or bottlefeeding? 

Breastfeeding has nutritional advantages, but the two methods are equal when it comes to inciting cavities.

Should I let my child suck his (or her) thumb? 

It’s normal in infants, and most stop on their own when they reach age 2. If he continues after 2, try to get him to stop by age 4, when thumbsucking can make teeth grow in crooked and crowded. It can also lead to bite problems. 

What about pacifiers?

They’re fine, but never dip them in honey, sugar or sweetened liquid. As with thumbsucking, try to wean him off it by age 2. 

When should I take him for his first dental checkup? 

When his first tooth erupts or on his first birthday. The appointment will give him an early introduction to the dentist and demonstrate that going to the dentist should be routine. 

How should I clean my toddler’s teeth? 

Use a soft-bristled, child-sized toothbrush in a circular or wiggling motion on all tooth surfaces, especially at all the gumlines. When he’s able to spit, apply a pea-sized dab of toothpaste on the bristles. 

What about dental floss? 

When subsequent teeth arrive next to each other, use floss to clean between them. Yes, those 20 primary teeth eventually fall out, but maintain them well so they do soahead of schedule. One of their many purposes is to hold places for permanent teeth. 

When can hestart brushing on his own?

Monitor each session to ensure he’s doing everything correctly. Then, when he demonstrates good motor control (typically between 6 and 9), he’ll likely be ready to effectively brush his teeth without supervision.
