More the fun it is, the more likely they are to do it. Children can find brushing their teeth a chore, but by using some creative techniques, you may find they just might be more willing to brush. At the office of Jungle Dental, our caring professionals are committed to the oral health of your child. Here are some ways we recommend to make dental hygiene fun:
1. Ready, set, go! Good dental hygiene starts with brushing teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time — something that can be a challenge for active kids. Use a cute hourglass to help them keep time as the sand runs out.
2. Take your pick: Have your child choose his toothbrush. Today, there is an assortment of kiddy toothbrushes — from familiar cartoon characters to those in the shape of animals like penguins or cats. Remember to opt for age-appropriate tools, such as toddler toothbrushes, flossers without sharp edges, and power toothbrushes, and make sure the toothbrush has soft bristles and a head that fits well in the child’s mouth.
3. Be a role model: Young children like to imitate their parents, so show them the right way to clean as you brush along with them. Parents should also assist their young children in flossing and brushing their teeth thoroughly to remove food debris from hard-to-clean areas.
4. Incorporate brushing into playtime: Find a spare toothbrush and encourage your child to brush their stuffed animal’s teeth, or their baby doll’s teeth. Read books about teeth and oral hygiene. Role play and let your child brush your teeth. The more they see the behavior modeled in everyday life, the more they will want to do it.
